Marriage Counselling and Couples Therapy
I offer marriage counselling to couples who are in a state of crisis like after the discovery of an extra-marital affair or when the passion is in short supply and you feel like you have drifted apart.
Many couples come for marriage counselling in a crisis or as a last resort. However, it is a good idea to come to couples counselling when problems are less entrenched and before one person has already given up or left. This makes it easy to repair and strengthen the relationship.
I provide couples therapy to people who are linked romantically – married, living together, engaged, or temporarily separated and interested in reconciling.
Family Counselling for Parents and Their Teenagers
I offer family counselling when families are in a state of crisis like after the discovery of drugs in your teens room, a hospitalization or when the level of disrespect from your teen seems unbearable.
Many families come to family counselling in a crisis or when parents are at the end of their rope. It is a good idea to come to counselling when problems are less entrenched and before you have kicked your teen out of home.
Parent Counselling and Therapy for Parents of Teens
Sometimes I offer counselling to parents only (the child or teen does not attend). This can occur because of the unwillingness of the teen to attend family counselling or because they are not needed to address issues. Sometimes parental counselling reveals marital problems which can then be addresses in marriage counselling.
Personal Counselling and Therapy
I offer personal counselling to people who are in need of support and ideas about how to deal with present or past relationships, or manage their moods: anger, anxiety, panic or depression. Sometimes this may come after marriage or family therapy with me or may be requested at the outset.
Length and Frequency of Counselling Sessions
The first marriage counselling session is 90 minutes. All other marriage, family, parent and personal counselling sessions are 55 minutes long. I recommend that you attend weekly at the beginning so that we can get familiar with one another and correct the most distressing problems at the outset as well as prevent deterioration of the gains you make between sessions. When progress is made and confidence to solve issues on your own grows, we increase the interval to 2, 3, and 4 weeks. A follow up counselling session occurs 3-6 months after the final regular session.
Are You Unable to Meet In-Person?
Phone Counselling May Help
The telephone is a very effective way to receive personal therapy when an in-person session is difficult or impractical. It is particularly effective for those who have demanding schedules, are not in the Toronto or Newmarket area, or relate strongly to the voice.
Phone counselling works best when there is only one person present for the counselling session at a time. For example: individuals wanting therapy for relationship issues or parent and teens who attend sessions separately.
Phone counselling is not usually as effective when several people are involved simultaneously for the session. For example: most cases of couples counselling and family counselling when parents and their teens are seen together. However, phone therapy may be appropriate for more than one person on an occasional basis when in-person counselling is not an option.
The Benefits of Phone Counselling Include:
Privacy & Comfort
You may feel more comfortable having frank conversations with your counsellor if you are in a setting that is private and familiar to you such as your own home, a place that helps you feel safe and comfortable.
Anonymity
Phone counselling can help you avoid potential embarrassment. There's no chance of running into anyone you know in the waiting room of the counselling office. There will be no one looking at you as you talk about private matters or secrets. This may permit you to be more free and honest during your therapy session.
Supplements In-person Counselling
When you are unable to make your in-person session due to work or other obligations, phone counselling can be an alternate way for getting help.
Counselling comes to you
Phone counselling is always accessible. Even if you live in a remote area, have a chronic illness, back pain or depression that keeps you in bed, you can still pick up the phone and call me.
There's no commute
Picking up the phone eliminates the stresses of getting to your therapist's office on time, while battling traffic and paying a fee to park.
Payment is convenient
Each therapy session is 45 minutes long. The cost is $100 CDN. You may pay on this website at the Contact Allan page under Online Payment. Fees must be paid before the counselling session.
When is Phone Counselling not Appropriate?
Telephone counselling is not suitable for someone who is having extreme difficulties or psychiatric conditions such as severe depression, bipolar disorder, or an eating disorder. Any client with a critical situation, a crisis, or in need of suicide prevention, or deem themselves or others to be in danger of any kind, are hereby directed to go to the nearest hospital or may call 911 for emergency response.
